This Monday (18 January) Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Moratinos is following an invitation of JEF and Europa-Union Deutschland to speak about “Chances, Challenges and Priorities of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the light of the new EU-Treaty“. I will be attending and of course I’ll try to twitter from the event. Naturally Spain has already published its programme (PDF) for the first half of 2010 but since Moratino’s appearence is thought to have a discussion it would be rude not to pose any questions. Unfortunately and because of the hearings I haven’t really dealt with the Spanish presidency, yet. However  I know many of you have, so I’m asking you. Is there anything that you would like me to ask him?

[Update: 18 January] This is how life goes sometimes. Because of an ad-hoc Council of the Foreign Ministers on the issue of Haiti in BXL which took longer than scheduled, Moratinos couldn’t make the appointment this afternoon in Berlin. So, unfortunately I couldn’t get the questions in. Neither could the other 200 guests of the discussion. At least he had the time to talk to some German MPs. Good for them, too bad for us. :(

Alles, was sich an Zivilgesellschaft in Belarus in der Vergangenheit regte, ganz zu schweigen von kritischen Stimmen an der Politik Lukaschenkos, wird auf Grundlage von Gesetzen, die auf Initiative Lukaschenkos vom gefügigen Parlament beschlossen wurden, als extremistisch eingestuft und bestraft.

Bereits im Vorfeld der Wahlen hat die JEF-Europa die politische Entwicklung in Belarus kritisiert. In der Nacht vom 18.03.2006 auf den 19.03.2006, dem Tag der Wahlen in Belarus, zogen in den Städten Europas Junge Föderalisten auf die Straße und verbanden Statuen und Denkmälern berühmter Persönlichkeiten die Münder, um symbolisch auf das Verbot zur freien Meinung der belarussischen Bevölkerung hinzuweisen.

Ein Jahr nach den unfreien Wahlen ist der Diktator Lukaschenko weiterhin im Amt. Die JEF wird ihre erfolgreiche Kampagne daher wiederholen, und es nehmen noch mehr Organisationen teil. Die Aktion, die in vielen deutschen Städten wie z. B. Berlin, Chemnitz, Jena und Freiburg stattfindet, erhält auch international, aus über 60 Städten, u.a. Paris, Vilnius, Stockholm, Bukarest, Warschau und Boston, Unterstützung.
