Während sich in Deutschland berechtigter Protest gegen Cecilia Malmström und ihre Netzzensurpläne formt, hat “It’s Your Parliament” einen kleinen Schritt für mehr Transparenz im Europäischen Parlament getan und über Twitter mitgeteilt, dass Sie ihre API für das Abstimmungsverhalten der Europaparlamentarier öffnen und allen zur Verfügung stellen. Auf www.itsyourparliament.eu/api/ können sich nun Interessierte ihre eigenen Anwendungen zu den Daten des Europäischen Parlament zusammenbasteln.
Ich bin gespannt, welche tollen, kreativen Projekte sich mit den Daten realisieren lassen. Eines ist jedoch jetzt schon klar. Es werden ihre Bürger sein, die der EU zeigen müssen, dass offene Daten nicht nur einfach bereitzustellen sind, sondern auch einen erheblichen Betrag zu einer transparenten und bürgerfreundlichen Verwaltung leisten können.
Es sei hier übrigens nochmals auf ein ähnliches Projekt hingewiesen: epvote.eu, wenn es auch keine offene API bereithält.
Wirklich interessante Entwicklung.
Bin mal gespannt ob http://www.votewatch.eu/ reagiert. Das ist eigentlich die Seite mit dem größten Potential wenigstens von den Namen der teilnehmenden Organisationen her….

Ich habe noch keinen API-Key bekommen, aber die Einsatzmöglichkeiten dürften sehr weit über das Abstimmungsverhalten hinaus gehen. Ob die drei Seiten eigentlich mal eine Kooperation in Erwägung gezogen haben?

We actually had our system ready at the time VoteWatch launched their site. We don’t have any financial support whatsoever so we though it’d be a bad idea to try and compete with them (after all they have done a great job on their site and as you say “viele Köche verderben den Brei”). Instead we decided to alter our site as to try to achieve what VoteWatch in our opinion does not:
Simplicity, comparison of voting records of individual MEPs, news monitoring, user comments and user votes and now also the API. Next we are considering blog monitoring and other user related features.
We have written an email to votewatch telling them about our project before the release but got no response…also we have offered them scripts to parse Council data (fx the one we used for http://www.hvemstemmerhvad.dk/eu/council/) but got no reply on this either.
Feel free to contact us for a key to the API, we are happy to give them away ;)

As to the others sites, I see that there’s definitely a need for open data from the institutions and it’s cool to see that so many programmers are actually picking up on it and do the dirty work for the institutions. So a big thanks to all of you behind the respective projects. I’m excited to learn what you come up with next. :)
